Steps to Choosing a Heat Sink

Step 1:

The first step in selecting the proper heat sink for a specific application is to calculate the THERMAL IMPEDANCE or RESISTANCE required to meet the design parameters to be maintained and power dissipation of the semiconductor device or devices.

Step 2:

Once the thermal impedance is determined use the QUICK REFERENCE CHART below to determine if the application and the mechanical limitations can be satisfied with the natural convection system or if active cooling is required. If natural convection is feasible, using the NATURAL CONVECTION EXTRUSION LENGTH SELECTOR CHART, select the extrusion profile that meets you requirements. If active cooling is required, all standard product listed in the catalog, or website have a corresponding performance curve. Performance curves for all standard product extrusion profiles can be readily obtained from the factory. Application specific performance curves are readily available on any listed heat sink. With the proper application data, these performance curves can be generated in a matter of minutes for your application.
